Assistant Merchandiser

Location: South London

Overall Purpose of the Role:
Support department strategy in delivering a product offer that exceed customers’ expectations and achieves sales and profit targets through planning, trading and managing all aspects of stock to deliver company KPI’s in an efficient and effective manner.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
The Junior Merchandiser will be accountable for managing the financial performance of their department stock from initial planning through to the customer, with the support of the Merchandiser. The key role of the junior merchandiser is to work with Trading & Buying team to maximise profit by ensuring the right stock is in the right channel at the right time.
Profit Maximisation
  • Support preparation of department budgets, sales and profit targets
  • Monitor performance against budget, taking appropriate action to maximise sales and profit and reduce stockholding whilst increasing stock turn
  • Identify new business opportunities to grow sales and profitability for your departments with the support of the Merchandiser
  • Deliver cost effective supply solutions and achieve maximum full price sales and planned margin
  • Review, propose and implement mark-down activity to reduce terminal stock whilst analysing action taken on mark-downs to maximise profit
  • Drive increase in margin through new sourcing strategies and methods to build profit
  • Communicate trading issues and forecasts with proposed actions to the Merchandiser and Buyer
Range Building & Planning
  • Develop and agree plans in partnership with the Merchandiser & Buyer that achieve sales and profit targets and implement the agreed departmental strategy
  • Evaluate market and customer information together with historical data and forward trends to develop the department’s phased plans
  • Present the range for review achieving senior management approval with the support of the Merchandiser
  • Devise and implement clearance strategy for products exiting space post range review
  • Create a range plan to optimise the allocated space and maximise sales and profit density
  • Establish critical path for development and delivery of all product ranges
  • Agree and deliver promotional plans, optimising sales and profit
Inventory / Commitment Management
  • Manage the intake of stock in line with agreed stock levels and promotional plans
  • Manage the development of new stock packages
  • Manage 'Open to buy' with phased commitment to increase flexibility throughout the season
  • Monitor and manage the availability of stock with support of Assistant Merchandiser:
  • by ensuring planned launch and replenishment dates are met
  • meeting availability targets
  • managing the allocation of stock
  • managing in-store stock levels
  • managing terminal stock
  • Manage stock flow through Distribution Centre, resolving any issues that arise
  • As a convenience business availability is critical and the Junior Merchandiser must be driven to at all times exceed set availability targets
  • Responsible for commitment forecasts to suppliers to ensure continuous availability of supply
  • Responsible for ensuring that Assistant Merchandiser is placing all orders in line with sales forecasts and OTB
Lifecycle
  • Responsible for managing all aspects of stock lifecycle (stock statuses) for your department from initial creation through to clearance, maximising all opportunities to deliver the financial KPI’s and maximising cash margin by efficient management of stock
Supplier Management
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with suppliers
  • Analyse Suppliers’ delivery performance and, in conjunction with the Buyer, take appropriate actions
  • Contribute to future supplier strategies
Team Management
  • Assist Merchandiser in the management of the performance of the team; setting objectives, giving regular feedback and addressing poor performance
  • Ensure effective communication at all levels, to include communicating the Company/Divisional/Departmental strategy in addition to operational priorities
